When the credits roll

What do you do when you manage to pilfer pounds of stoned fruit from your parents? Make German plum tart, that’s what! My parents came back from the Okanagan earlier this week and on the way home stopped in at Keremeas, which is pretty much a town fruit stand, and came home with flats of fruit. And, you know, seeing as how it’s just the two of them, and they couldn’t possibly eat all that fruit on their own, I kinda, sorta, was totally obliged to take some of it off their hands 😉 Initially, I was just planning on eating it the old-fashioned way, possibly putting some of it into our morning smoothies, but then when I got home the other night, and was sitting at the dinner table alone, it dawned on me that those plums were hard, and hard plums are the most perfect plums for German […]

Be still my beating heart

Last time it was my favourite jeans, this time my favourite purse. Some would say maybe my priorities aren’t in the right place, but seriously, if you had spent the amount of time – years! – I spent looking for this beautiful creation of a purse, you would be doing everything in your power to save her from going up in flames too! Love! Yesterday started out like any other work day. It was deadline, I had a couple of stories I needed to file, and was diligently working away. I got up from my desk at around 11 a.m. to discuss something with my editor. I walked back to my desk around 11:05 a.m., sat down. At 11:06 a.m. my nose was piqued by the smell of burnt hair.  I looked up from my computer, and OHMYGAWD! The newsroom was suffocating with smoke! And because I’m such a good

Plan B

I didn’t puke, but oh man, I thought for sure I’d pee my pants. Yesterday morning I discovered I was going up in a plane for work; a fast-paced, high-flying, stomach-stuck-in-your-throat aerobatic plane. And while I love roller-coasters, no roller-coaster I have ever been on has outlined a Plan B – involving a parachute no less! – prior to boarding “in case of catastrophe!” The pilot, Super Dave, (seriously, he had to pick that name? I’m already freaking out and now I’m thinking of Super Dave Osborne’s many failed stunts) kept trying to tell me how to work the parachute, telling me it was important to look at the lever before pulling, and I kept saying “But we’re not going to have to use that right? Right?” Note to self: next time I fly, don’t wear a skirt … in my defense, I did not know when I dressed that

Waiting for the Great One

It was almost 21 years ago when, for two straight weeks, I would barrel out of bed the second the phone rang in the morning, and would blurt out the same question in rapid-fire excitement as soon as the receiver was gripped in my hand: “Is it time?” My big sister was preggers with my first niece, and being the youngest of four, I was so unbelievably stoked to finally have someone younger than me to boss around (priorities right!). Growing up, my dear sweet niece was almost like a little sister; I oohed and awed over her as a baby, grew increasingly annoyed with her as she found her own voice, realized she was a pretty awesome chick, held every one of her accomplishments in high esteem, and loved her every step of the way. One of those special moments forever captured between my niece and I on my

Making it count

Not all long weekends are perfect, in fact many don’t seem long enough, but this one was pretty darn near close to perfection. Sure I may have had a splitting head ache for a few hours of it and a couple of lows that tried to bring me down, but not even those could ruin it. In fact, they were just mere hiccups compared to everything else. Nothing spectacular happened, but a lot of good happened, and that combined surely adds up to spectacular. On Canada Day, Mario and I had a spontaneous date night and went out for some traditional Canadian grub at Las Margaritas (seriously, how is Mexican not Canadian?) then we went and saw Beginners at the Fifth Avenue, which is one our favourite theatres. And the movie, oh my goodness, I was on the verge of tears through the entire thing, and even at one point
