Sick day selections

Today is Day 3 and a half of being stuck at home, relegated to either the bed or the couch, and my gawd, I am bored as hell AND I have a super sore back! On the upside though, despite my nose still being completely stuffed up and infected green grodies still curdling out of my throat, I think I’m on the mend. My head isn’t quite so foggy, my voice isn’t quite so smoky, and I’m not struggling to climb the stairs nearly as much as I have been… I just need my blood sugars to get back on an even keel and the wheezing hack to disappear and I’ll be happy snappy once again. The only saving grace of being sick is the all-day viewing I get (between cat naps of course) of the Food Network and girly, girly movies. My top 10 best sick day movies: 13 […]

SURPRISE!!!

Want to know a secret? Do you? Do you really want to know? Okay, I’ll tell you: I can keep a secret! SURPRISE!!! 😀 This was a questionable thing. My family has never been good at keeping secrets, we get so excited about things that we are just bursting at the seams to spill the beans. It comes from the top. My moms  is the worst (sorry moms!). She tries to keep her mouth shut, tries with all her might, but she just can’t do it. Case in point: Christmas gift exchange. Every year my family draws names, and a good portion of us try to guess who has who. Obviously I start with my moms. But this year, she swore up and down that she was not going to tell, oh no, “it was a secret,” she said. But without further prodding she continued, “all I’ll tell you is

Kitchen nightmares

[Note: this post was meant to be published yesterday, but because of a surprise three and a half hour visit to the hospital last night, it was delayed… more on the hospital visit tomorrow] Thank heavens my one-day-of-the-year cooking fiasco is over! There is a reason I am not a regular fixture in our kitchen day in and day out. It’s not because the rapid fire of F bombs exiting my mouth offends me, or because I’m too lazy to lift a ladle or saute onions, or because I’m a horrible cook. That’s not true at all, I’m actually quite decent at it when I put my mind to it. Nope, the reason I choose not to cook is because it’s a bloody marathon! Seriously, four hours slaving over a hot stove (and that does not include the dessert aspect of the evening) left me so drained, achy and exhausted

2011: a princess perfect year

2011 was a year full of personal bests, discoveries, and lots of laughter; a great one indeed. And it started with a bang. January: Resolution Run While most were sleeping away hangovers on the morning of Jan. 1, I was up early racing against myself in the Running Room’s 5 km Resolution Run; I won. I crossed the finish line with a personal best that shaved a good 2 minutes 38 seconds off my previous 5k PB. It was the first of four personal bests this year. While training for my second marathon, Run for Water, which was at the end of May, I clocked in a two-hour, 24-second half marathon time at the Good Life Fitness Toronto Half in the middle of May, cutting my previous half time by nearly 4 minutes. Two weeks later I finished Run for Water with a time of 4:44:24; not quite the time

Tradition

It’s crazy how long the build-up for Christmas is, hey (I’m pretty sure I heard my first carol the day after Halloween) and then how quick it comes to an end. These last few days have been a blur of social gatherings, glittery shoes, movie goings, Christmas traditions, and chaotic festivities. Today, the day after Christmas, the wrapping paper is all put away, the cookie crumbles fast forming, and the clock back to it’s regular tick-tock, tick-tock. But the memories, they will always stay. Vancouver Christmas Market. On Thursday evening we went to the Vancouver Christmas Market with our favourite Italian family. In just its second year, the German market already had way more vendors than the previous year. All around us there was music, German dialect, German pastries, German burnt cheese (blech!) German wine and German beer. There were German knick knacks, German stines, and a whole assortment of
