What would you do?

Am I ready for the Nike Women’s Half? I don’t know, I really, really don’t know. On the one hand, I have completely fugged up my training, like completely. When I started back in July, which was like a month later than I probably should have (what can I say, I was in major marathon hangover mode at the time) but still had fully intended on logging longer mileage in an effort to try to emulate that super amazing race – AND TIME! – I had at the Toronto Half in May while training for my second marathon later that month. My body, however, had other plans. With just six weeks left of training, I got pummeled by injury, an injury so bloody annoying, it had me off not just running, but ALL training for a full week, and then running for a full three weeks. The last time I […]

San Francisco: stairway to heaven

The hills were unavoidable. It didn’t matter how much I tried to block my eyes, avert my eyes, shut my eyes, in San Francisco, I was surrounded by hills. And not mole hills. Oh no, these suckers were straight up, stomach in your gut, oh my god, what I have I gotten myself into hills. Lombard Street: One of the world’s crookedest streets featuring eight tight switchbacks, which were designed out of necessity as most vehicles in 1922 could not ascend the 27% grade! On most occasions, I am not a fan of knowing the route of my races or even my long runs before heading out. I don’t want to know if I’ll be having to run rolling hills, or descend down stairway to heaven hills, I don’t want to know if one of my running partners has picked a route that I hate or a route that bores

Freaky Friday…er Saturday

Fondo day was a true role reversal day for Mario and I. While he has watched me run 5 km races, 10 km races, half marathons and full marathons time and time again, last Saturday was the first race I had truly waited and watched for him. See, last year when Mario rode into the finish for the Whistler Gran Fondo, I was stuck in a major traffic jam trying to get from the Squamish rest station, where I had been volunteering for four hours prior, to the finish at Whistler. But unfortunately, I arrived 15 minutes after he had already finished. This time, I was not going to let that happen. First, I signed Mario up for the full fondo to ensure I’d have plenty of time to scope out the perfect spot to be front and centre for him at the finish line. And second, I volunteered for

Leaving on a jet plane

When going on holidays, how many shoes are too many shoes? Given the look on Mario’s face when he saw my entire wardrobe strewn on my bed and my many shoes lining the outskirts of my bed, I’m guessing he’d say two. I say four … okay maybe five 😉 Tomorrow morning Mario and I will be boarding a plane for San Francisco where we will then be renting a car to take us to Sonoma County, where we will be embarking upon a week of wine tasting, Lance Armstrong stalking, and Mario cheering festivities. Some of you may recall, for Mario’s birthday back in January, I had registered him for the Levi Leipheimer Gran Fondo, which is 103 miles, 160 km – the most he’s ever ridden – through Sonoma County. Now, I’ll be honest, while I looked like a super amazing wife at the time (and I totally

Pain before gain

Note to self: Do not EVER plan an event. About a month ago I had organized a run for my girls and I along the Seawall. I even made a Facebook page of it! I hadn’t run with any of them in so long as we’re all on different training schedules and I figured it would be a great opportunity to bring us all together again. The event – Run with Royalty – was scheduled for Sunday. You will note, I did not run Sunday. That’s because I injured my knee; tweaked it two weeks prior to the run, full on injured it a week prior, thus causing me to cancel 🙁 With no running, I got lots of ‘artistic’ time on my hands (much to Mario’s chagrin I’m sure) 😉 I was mortified. Not because I couldn’t run necessarily, and not because I was worried that my training would be
