Who needs Superman when there’s Banting and Best

Ahhh insulin, we’ve had quite the ride haven’t we. In the beginning, I thought for sure you were my enemy, and just like the scared, little kid I was, I avoided you at all costs, health included. But as we grew together, once I was forced to accept your wisdom, our relationship gradually evolved into something that is now quite beautiful. You could even describe it as BFF-like. And so today, dear insulin, I give you homage. Today is World Diabetes Day, and I’ll be honest, despite having this disease for more than 24 years, I had no clue that Nov. 14 was World Diabetes Day until just last month. It probably had something to do with the fact that I never really cared, and again, I’ll be honest, I’m still kind of dubious about the whole “day” thing. All day the Twitter feed, blogs, even my own email was […]

Where I belong

Forget dressing up as a princess; I’m already one of those. Forget Hermoine Granger’s book bags and wizardry outfits. Forget even painting my face Smurfette blue. This year for Halloween I dressed up as a marathoner, and took full opportunity to go trick-or-treating. And by trick-or-treating, I mean running of course. Wait a sec, you’re thinking, she already told us this, yesterday, the day of. Yes, I did. But I did not tell you the significance of yesterday’s run. Two things: 1) It was my first run since Tiffany. 2) It was Mario’s first run since the start of cycling season. Let’s start with me first, because, well, I like to talk about me 😉 Before leaving the loft, Mario looked at me in my shorts and two technical shirts with concern all over his face. You do realize it’s cold out there, he said. I nodded. Like freezing cold,

Ch…ch…ch…changes

Change can’t all be bad, right? (says the girl who does NOT adapt well to change at all) I mean the changing of seasons, especially from summer to fall is gorgeous, and going from a single girl to a married girl, that was kind of fun, and after years of letting Type 1 control me, finally taking the bastard by the horns and kicking it in the ass over and over again, that’s kind of … exhilarating, really. Changing of the seasons in Berlin 2010 And yet, I am a girl who more times than not does not like change. I like things a certain way, I like routine, I like to know what’s coming at me at all times. (Just look at my lunch. Five days a week, I eat a ham and cheese sandwich, with an apple and yogurt. On the weekend, every weekend, without fail, I eat

The hangover

What now? It’s been a week and a half since I last ran, which really isn’t that long at all, and yet, I feel kind of lost, like I have an emptiness in my belly… or legs, I should say. I see Facebook posts of girlfriends preparing for their next running adventures, I read blogs all about running, and magazines all about running, but I’m not running. I don’t have a plan and I planned it that way. I’ve been training almost non-stop now for more than two years (aside from a couple months where I was recovering from injury) and I’ve felt for quite some time that I’ve needed a break from training. So, while my favourite running chicks were planning this run and that run, I purposely stayed quiet, I was not going to jump into anything new. I wanted a break and by golly I was going

Oh. My. McDreamy.

I did what you told me moms, I envisioned it, I dreamed it, I pictured it real hard, and you know what, it actually worked. Me and McDreamy. Ahhhh sigh. The day before the Levi Leipheimer Gran Fondo, Mario and I headed into Santa Rosa to pick up his race packet at the Finley Centre and to explore the expo. While Mario had his eyes peeled for cycling deals and cycling treats, I had mine peeled for dreamy cyclists 😀 Found me a team truck, now all I needed was to find me a Levi. There wasn’t a whole heck of a lot going on for either of us. We were in and out of the registration area in less than an hour. Feeling a little disappointed (more so on my end) we headed for the exits. On the way out, Mario caught a sign telling us that Levi would
