Run hard. Run fast. No excuses.

Before even finishing my run yesterday, I knew I had kicked those speed intervals out of the park, that I had gone all Speedy Gonzalez on that pavement, and that my Garmin deets would make me smile upon reviewing them later that evening. I knew this because for the first 5 minutes of the 10-minute cool down route back home, I could not for the life of me budge my pace any faster than 6:30 minutes per kilometre. I was pooped! And pretty fricken’ proud of myself underneath all that heavy huffing and puffing too 😀 Blue = speed The other night, when I completed my so-called shaking out the cobwebs run, and felt good in my legs, I knew I had more to offer, and I knew I wanted to offer more. I want to be faster, which means I’ve got to put more effort into my speed training. […]

Injury strategy 101

I don’t know if I’m being a wimp, overly cautious or smart as elephants, but whatever it is, it’s driving me bloody crazy. During last week’s rainy tempo run (the last five minutes!!!) I felt a bit of irritation in my calf muscle; the defined-looking area located between the calf and the shin when you look profile. (Google Doctoring tells me it’s the soleus muscle.) At first I thought it was just a bit of tightness, no biggie. I’d roll it out and all would be good. But no, it seems my leg had other plans. The three-minute massage with the stick resulted in a tender bruised sensation. And on Saturday, when I went out for a run, as soon as I pushed off I felt the throbbing 34 seconds in. Sigh. I quit the run then and there, grimacing at the lost opportunity for a run in the sun,

Saying goodbye

It felt as though I had been out of love with my Kona Zing for years, almost since I got him it seemed. Every time we hit the pavement, I had nothing but complaints. He’s too slow. He’s too heavy. He squeaks,. Seriously, why the heck is he so far behind? But that evening when Big Ring walked up the stairs, his eyes all alight with excitement, a strange sadness filled my heart. My bike had been sold. And suddenly, it was no longer the glass half empty bike, but rather, the glass full. As I slid my hand over his top tube for a final moment, my heart lurched. I remembered when I first rode him around the neighbourhood, up and down the same street repeatedly so Big Ring could capture our first moments together. And that blistering hot afternoon, riding under the canopy of trees, when I finally

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: And then there were two

Remember a month ago, when I teased you all with a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT on the horizon, and then I pretty much didn’t say a word of it since. Well folks, we just needed to make sure all our ducks were in a row, tests were done, no false alarms, everyone healthy. And now, our news is finally ready to be revealed (eeeeeeeeeee!!!) and I am so stinkin’ excited! Are you ready for it? Like really, really ready? Okay, here goes 😀 Just when Big Ring, Little Ring and I were starting to get into a groove, we were hit with a pleasant surprise. The dynamics of our family, dear friends, is again changing. Little Ring is getting a Little Sister!!! Yup, that’s my belly with a bike inside. Hehe 🙂 In late February, The Rings and I went to the Vancouver Bike Show, which was a huge game changer for me.

Running with BOB, part 2

So. BOB. I suppose I should retract some of my former statements regarding my newest running partner. I suppose I should say I don’t loathe him, I don’t hate him, he’s not the worst thing to happen to running since toe shoes, but I’m kind of stubborn so I’m not going to outright say that 😉 Instead, I will tell you that we’ve actually kind of started working through those kilometres together, no longer fighting each other with each stride/roll we take. I don’t procrastinate my runs with him, nor do I fret them. It seems, I’ve finally resigned to the fact BOB is my new running partner… no getting around that. But my gawd, trying to keep up a good, solid, coach-instructed tempo pace – with BOB – is freaking hard as hell! Coach NZ wants me to be pacing out my tempo runs below 5:30 min/km, which should be
