The robin’s egg blue fondo

I’ve got two words to describe my very first fondo: No pressure. Unlike my running races, I wasn’t filled with nerves souring my belly, there weren’t anxious butterflies keeping me up all night, no stresses, no worries, nothing. The only goal I had going into the Living the Dream Fondo was to not be the last person to cross the finish line. Sure, I hadn’t ridden 56 km in nearly two years, and sure, my butt would likely suffer as a result. Sure, I had never ridden in a pack before, and sure, I’d seen the nasty mash-ups on big-time races. Sure, I had absolutely no confidence in changing a flat tire, even with the Tire Repair session I recently attended. And sure, maybe the concern in Big Ring’s eyes should have struck a flurry of worry in me when he handed me his patch kit and I, with my own […]

BMO Vancouver 8 km race recap

I’m not going to lie and say I wasn’t disappointed with my first race back. Sure my stats look pretty darn decent: 11th in my age category (30-34); 72nd out of 490 women running; and 163rd overall out of 861 runners. But my finish time wasn’t the time I wanted. I went into the BMO Vancouver 8 km race yesterday morning with the intention of completing in 42:00 minutes. That did not happen. My Garmin time at 8 km was 44:03 and my chip time was 45:17. I don’t want to be the girl with excuses because my mantra for this race all along has been no excuses and by the time this post is complete I hope you will agree that I am not, in any way, excusing myself. But there were obstacles. With a 6:30 a.m. start time, I was out of bed by 3:30 and eating a

BMO, bikes butts and bits

Here we go again! It has been just shy of 1 year and 7 months since I last set out to run a race, and while I’m not doing a marathon, half marathon, or even 10 km for that matter, this Sunday, when I snap my Garmin around my wrist and lace my sneakers up for the Vancouver BMO 8 km run, I will be racing – against the other runners on the road, against myself, against Garmin, and most importantly against those frustratingly pokey demons in my head! Given that it’s been so long since I a) have run a race, and b) have raced a distance this short, I’m not sure I prepared as well as I should have… I’m not sure if it was wise I ran speed repeats last Monday; one of the windiest days I’ve ever endured on a run. And even if it was okay,

Assumption kills the race

After years months of negotiation, reviewing routes, location, timing, and swag for various organized runs, Big Brother and I finally put our hats in the ring for the Vancouver BMO 8 km route to be our second annual sibling rivalry run. By all accounts, this run had everything. The timing was perfect for both of us, it wasn’t during the height of the summer heat or summer travel, it features a beautiful scenic route around Stanley Park, and it’s for the most part a flat run, which Big Brother emphasized was important (you will recall the hill that broke him in our last run). The distance was also a compromise for both of us. It wasn’t 5 km, which Big Brother wanted, nor was it 10 km, which I wanted – a happy medium. But today, I regret to inform you the second annual sibling rivalry run has been postponed 🙁

Kicking out the cobwebs

So, today’s run. It was just supposed to be a shake the cobwebs out kind of run. I haven’t run in more than two weeks, first due to injury then illness. So when the sun spontaneously showed up this afternoon (following a cold morning/early afternoon of monsoon rain, and even flakes of snow at one point) I decided it was the perfect opportunity for a light, easy 5 km out and back. And if all went well, tomorrow I would start back with my proper training. It was a good plan, in theory, but, well, you’ve kind of got to follow through with it in order for it to work 😉 You see, the thing is, my friends, I hadn’t run in two weeks – two weeks! And you see, I kinda, sorta have this whole second annual sibling rivalry run in two weeks – two weeks! Do you see
