Getting screwed…

Safeway, Airmiles, Ministry of Health, I hate you all! Okay, so you might think hate is a pretty strong word, and maybe I don’t hate them, but I am very, very, very angry with all of them. There are very few perks to having diabetes. Sure I was able to get out of class by feigning low blood sugars and if I didn’t want to run around the track (which was pretty much always) I could get out of that too, but once I was out of school, what few perks there were fast faded. I mean, it is a disease after all, it’s not supposed to be fun, right. But there was one perk, a somewhat ultimate perk, to having this disease that made it a little more tolerable: Airmiles! On average I go to the pharmacy once every nine days and dole out anywhere from $75 to $350 […]

Disease up for grabs

Diabetes, YOU SUCK!!! It’s not often you’ll hear me whining about my disease, sure it’s not the most fun disease to have, and it is a bit of an inconvenience, and as a kid I hated it, but compared to other things, it’s not the end of the world, so I try and make the best of it. I mean it’s not going away right, so there’s no real point in spilling tears over it. But, then again, there are times when the damn thing just out and guts you. And for seven months now, the knife has been poking me, jabbing me, taunting me. Today, it full on broke the skin. Having diabetes, you’d think, would be punishment enough, that the gods would look more favourably on me when it came to other viruses and diseases because I’ve already suffered, right. Wrong. At 18, I was put on two

Goldilocks and the fear

Diabetes Lesson No. 941: Walking is exercise. After work I met up with my favourite ironchickie for a post-birthday (me) and post-half-ironman (her) walk along the dykes in the Valley. I had planned on testing my blood sugars before heading out, just as I do before all other exercise, but I think the excitement of seeing my dear friend combined with getting lost trying to find the parking lot, and coming across two toddler billie goats lounging in the middle of a dead end road (I kid you not, I thought they were dogs from afar, but as I got closer I saw their furry horns) completely threw me off. And it wasn’t until about 3.5 km into the 5 km walk, when I realized that I hadn’t tested my blood sugars and that I had also not stuffed any sugar-related goodies into my pocket, and that my legs were

Yellow tomatoes and purple potatoes

I don’t know about you, but when my birthday comes around, there’s a list of things I feel I shouldn’t have to do, like clean my bathroom, make the bed (thank you Mario), put gas in my car, and change my infusion. Unfortunately for me, yesterday, my birthday – the greatest day on Earth – was also infusion changing day. Ugh! But fortunately for me it was my birthday, and it totally lived up to its hype, it was a great, great, great day. Have I mentioned I love my birthday 😀 It was a day filled with sunshine and strawberry covered waffles, bike rides and farmers markets, presents, presents, presents, ice cream cake (obviously!), a little bit of France, a little bit of New York and a Bianchi too! … jersey that is … one step closer to having my very own beautiful Bianchi. Good golly, I thought I was

Boulevard of broken dreams

Dear Marathon, You and me, we are so over. And let me be clear on this, it was you, not me that ruined this relationship. Yes, yes, I know I was the one who sought you out, who longed for your elusive, bad boy ways, but I’ve done you twice now, and both times you kind of sucked ass. I mean seriously, did you really think we were going to last when you repeatedly punched me in the gut for 20 straight kilometres, and joyously cackled when my legs seized up at 30 kms, and laughed at my blister-clad feet, and taunted me with every shaky step I took. Really? Yeah, no. And don’t you try to come crawling back to me with your gold trinkets, because it won’t work, I’m done, I’m moving on … with your half cousin! Who’s laughing now jerk face? Sincerely, Princess RUN FOR WATER
