Assumption kills the race

After years months of negotiation, reviewing routes, location, timing, and swag for various organized runs, Big Brother and I finally put our hats in the ring for the Vancouver BMO 8 km route to be our second annual sibling rivalry run. By all accounts, this run had everything. The timing was perfect for both of us, it wasn’t during the height of the summer heat or summer travel, it features a beautiful scenic route around Stanley Park, and it’s for the most part a flat run, which Big Brother emphasized was important (you will recall the hill that broke him in our last run). The distance was also a compromise for both of us. It wasn’t 5 km, which Big Brother wanted, nor was it 10 km, which I wanted – a happy medium. But today, I regret to inform you the second annual sibling rivalry run has been postponed 🙁 […]

Chicken and Rice Soup

April 17, 2013: Cook’s Country – February/March issue Chicken and Rice Soup “Too often, cutting corners in an effort to save time spoils the broth. Our version of chicken and rice soup cuts down on time but not on flavor.” ~ Erika Bruce Well now, that chicken was a helluva lot easier – and tastier! – to prepare than the last chicken I tried. No near salmonella poisoning this time, oh no! For this month’s challenge I had planned a completely different recipe with the intent of taking on dinner duty last Sunday. But this stupid cold got in the way, and the last thing me and my stuffed head wanted to do was spend hours cursing in the kitchen. And so, the ingredients that could be frozen were put in the freezer, and the fresh ingredients we hoped to use in other meals. As the days past, my head did

I am a runner

I don’t get it. I just don’t get it. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around yesterday’s senseless act of evil at the Boston Marathon, but I can’t. I don’t understand the mentality, I don’t understand the act, I don’t understand any of it. Reading and watching the news coverage, my heart broke for the people, the city, the innocence. And I kept asking why. Why? Today, like thousands of others, I stand in solidarity with my fellow runners, my fellow spectators, my fellow people. My community is in my heart. I am a runner.

Sick sucks

A word to the wise, do NOT mess with karma, because let me tell you, I just got kicked in the butt by that turd-eating jerk face! Not even two days after telling a girlfriend I hadn’t been sick in almost a year and a half and that Little Ring hadn’t been sick in ever, both of us were struck down by Karma’s nasty pal the common cold. And let me tell you, you all think you have it rough when you get sick, try getting sick with diabetes AND a sick baby in tow. That is just pure fricken’ evil. Karma, you don’t play fair, not at all. About mid week last week, I had started to experience fluctuations in my blood sugars, higher readings than I’m used to, and no matter what I did, they just kept creeping up and up and up. I thought maybe there was

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: And then there were two

Remember a month ago, when I teased you all with a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT on the horizon, and then I pretty much didn’t say a word of it since. Well folks, we just needed to make sure all our ducks were in a row, tests were done, no false alarms, everyone healthy. And now, our news is finally ready to be revealed (eeeeeeeeeee!!!) and I am so stinkin’ excited! Are you ready for it? Like really, really ready? Okay, here goes 😀 Just when Big Ring, Little Ring and I were starting to get into a groove, we were hit with a pleasant surprise. The dynamics of our family, dear friends, is again changing. Little Ring is getting a Little Sister!!! Yup, that’s my belly with a bike inside. Hehe 🙂 In late February, The Rings and I went to the Vancouver Bike Show, which was a huge game changer for me.
