Dazed and confused

One year later… I went for a run, but this time there was no Big Ring running a few steps behind me (he was at home caring for Little Ring); there was no Garmin, but rather a beat up old Timex; there was no fancy free footing either, more like a deep gutted fear of the gremlins in the pavement looking to take me down; nor was there the beginnings of a thumb-sucking alien baby in my belly. One year later… I was so lost in my thoughts that I actually got lost (turned around if you will) coming back from my second run of the year on the boardwalk – a route I have walked and run for nearly four years, a route I frequent nearly every day, a route I bloody well LIVE on. It’s no secret I am majorly directionally challenged, but seriously, this was an all-time low […]

Running reunion take 2

The cool breeze tickled my cheeks. My smile glittered for miles and miles. My feet were light as a feather. My limbs loose as a grandpappy’s shirt. Freedom. That’s what my first run of 2013 will forever be. And here we go again 😀 TONIGHT’S RUN: 5:30 p.m. BG before: 7.6 Temp. basal: none (I had a Zbar (16 grams carbs) an hour before with no bolus) Distance: 4 minute intervals to a total of 12 minutes with 1 minute walking between each interval. 6 p.m. BG after: 5.4 Update on the ankle coming soon!!!

2013: the year I get my feet back

2012: There were no sun-drenched long runs, no personal bests, no races, in fact, there was hardly any running at all. And yet, it was a year I shall cherish for always. It was the second week of January (the day after Big Ring’s birthday) that we found out (while running!) we had a little thumb-sucking alien baby growing in my belly. I had vowed to keep up with my running, and was sure I’d be able to run the 5 km Run for Water in May, and the first Starbucks Women’s Run in June, but unfortunately my body and blood sugars had other ideas. By mid March, I had retired my running shoes to the closet, in favour of hiking and walking shoes. Clockwise: Starbucks (WALK) for Women in June; hiking Lynn Valley in May; retiring my running sneakers in March. It was a year full of all-day nausea,

Injury report #1: damn you feet

Is my body really just 34 years old? Really? Because sometimes (a lot of the time) it feels as though it’s more like 90 years old! I’ve had multiple hip issues, my knees have failed me, my ankles, my feet, my shoulder, etc., etc., etc.. But this time I thought I was doing everything right. I waited three months before I started running again; I strengthened my hips; I started in on my core. It was all part of the ‘Keep Me Injury Free’ plan, and it was a good plan, but unfortunately, it was a plan that couldn’t beat my stupidly frail limbs! Just two weeks into my running reunion and I was once again sidelined by injury. Oh freaking joy 🙁 It all started back on that fateful first night with my new sneakers. Those flashy Asics, it turned out, were not the proper shoes for my picky

The Grinch, er, Coach

In the spirit of Christmas, and because I do so love caroling (much to Big Ring’s chagrin), and because, following my first aqua jogging session in nearly a year, I was inspired, I’ve decided to treat you all with a carol of my own. Here’s to you Coach NZ 😉 You’re an evil one, Mrs. Coach. You really are a boss, While your accent is cuddly as a bear, charming as a debonair, It doesn’t fool me, because I know You’re just a sweat-loving Kiwi with a stinky brown peel! You’re a monster, Mrs. Coach, Your heart’s an empty gear, Your brain is full of speed intervals, You’ve got killer pushups and nasty tricep dips in your soul, Mrs. Coach, I wouldn’t touch you with a thirty nine and a half foot pole! You’re a vile one, Mrs. Coach. You have pace bunnies in your smile. You have all the
