This day…

Note: this post technically should have been published yesterday, but, well, I’m a new mom and it seems nothing gets done on time these days… it’s within the weekend though, so it still counts 😉 On this day five years ago, I was doing this: Paris: Kissing Oscar Wilde’s tombstone. On this day three years ago, I was doing this: Princess of Pavement’s Claustrophobic Half On this day two years ago I was doing this: Portland Marathon On this day one year ago I was doing this: Volunteering: Levi Leipheimer Gran Fondo On this day today, I was doing this: Walking along the boardwalk with my Little Ring snug against me. Today – and everyday – I am thankful for my health, my running, my goals, my travels, my parents biannual stuffing, and most importantly, my beautiful family. Happy Thanksgiving!

This woman

This woman is the most beautiful woman I know: She has a heart of gold, ears of a saint, and the hard-working hands of a carpenter. She will hula-hoop with you at any age. Will try to ‘Time Out’ and backtrack stories much to the laughter of all around her. And will be the best cheering crew at any race. Her eyes will instantly sparkle in the presence of her four children, nine-and-a-half grandchildren, and one great grandchild, and will do anything for them. She will cradle her six-year-old sobbing daughter if she’s just been run out of a birthday party by stupid bullies; she will sleep on an uncomfortable hospital cot to ensure her child doesn’t have to spend the night alone; she will cut her vacations short and hop on a jet at the first mention her child is in hospital; no matter what, no matter where, no

For the love of bling

It wasn’t Tiffany’s, but it was bling. As I stood in the cool Juneuary air with my moms, my favourite running chick and Miss Speedy next to me, a smile washed across my face while listening to the event organizer talk of the reasons why we had all congregated at Thunderbird Stadium that morning: “We wanted to stay fit, keep active, bond with other women,” she said. But my favourite running chick, she knew we were there for other reasons. She leaned over towards me, soft giggles exiting her mouth as she whispered, “I’m here for the bling!” Indeed. Saturday morning my moms and I walked the 5 km Starbucks Run for Women, while my favourites ran the 10k. Favourite Running Chick and Miss Speedy. It’s always a risk signing up for first-time events, knowing that they can’t possibly live up to the glory of well-established runs, but hoping they

Never Eat Soggy Weiners my butt

I knew something wasn’t right, could feel it in my bones, my legs, my feet. But I kept going … and going … and going. I had directions, Big Ring directions, which for most people probably border on the obsessive with the amount of detail in them, but for me are a necessity. You see, I get lost. A lot. It doesn’t matter how often I have walked, ran, cycled or driven an area, I will inevitably get turned around re-seeking that area. I get lost in the town I grew up in,  the town I currently live in, heck, I even get lost trying to find my way home again. Directions have absolutely no meaning to me, I don’t trust GPS’, I can’t read maps, and seriously, what the heck is up with that Never Eat Soggy Weiners compass cross that you learned about in Grade 3 – it doesn’t

Competitive juices boiling

So you know how I said in my last post that I wasn’t affected by having to walk Run for Water? Well, I wasn’t at the event itself, but I was the next day – when I started looking at the times of people I knew who actively ran the varying courses. I saw good times, great times, unbelievable times. And you know what, the competitive juices in my belly instantly began to boil. I want to be fast. Super. Princess. Fast. I don’t just want to run the runs anymore, I want to kick their asses and have a blast doing it. So, where do I go from here? Well, me and my pregnant belly we will continue what we’re doing currently, but come three or so months from now (people keep saying I’m gonna need recovery time after thumb-sucking alien baby arrives, but I’m taking that advice with a
