Freedom Friday

Phew! My family and I survived our first week of me being a working mom. The first day was tough as nails, my jaw hurting so bad fighting back those tears as I left my boy for the day, the second day was easier but I still felt the welling of tears in my eyes, but by the third day, I left with no feeling of tears, Big Ring felt more confident with daycare duties, and Little Ring made a buddy and slept for 2 hours at nap time. Success. And the fourth day… oh wait, there wasn’t a fourth day!!! First day of daycare. Instead of going back to work full-time, we decided I’d go back 4 days to save on daycare, gas, tolls, and wear and tear on the car, and also to grant us more quality time as a family. (Big Ring has Fridays off as well) […]

Could lunch running become MY thing?

The other day one of you my dear readers put a bug in my ear. Following the post I wrote earlier this week lamenting my lost running hours, Jocelyn over at Alberta Diabetic Girl suggested I run through lunch. Hmm… I honestly don’t know if I can make that happen, but by golly I am mighty intrigued by the idea. Not surprising really. Since going back to work on Tuesday, I have yet to get a run or strength training in. I’ve had good intentions when climbing into my car at the end of the day, but the first day there was an accident on the highway, which kept me in the car for nearly 2 hours, and the two other days, it was just a long commute, as they all are, and by the time I get home, I am thoroughly exhausted, and by the time Little Ring is

Goodbye morning

Yesterday morning, like so many others over these summer months, I woke up super early, climbed out of bed, put my running clothes  and shoes on, had a swig of water, bites of a granola bar, and headed out the door for a run. I didn’t argue for staying in bed, I didn’t question the hour, I just did it. Interesting… I’m not a morning person, not by a long shot, (a former co-worker turned great friend used to tease me about not being able to talk to me before 10 a.m.) and yet, these past few months of early morning runs, I’ve come to love. I love the solitude of no one else around. I love those silent moments of just me and my thoughts. I love the vibrancy of the night sky just before it turns to morning light. I love watching the warm hues of the sun

26 years of Dear Diabetes

About 30 years ago I had a dream. In my future, I wanted to be a doctor and an author. The author part was natural; I loved reading and I loved making up stories. But the doctor, well, that was the more the evil meanderings of a younger sister 😀 You see, my big sister Jules is nine years older than me, and back then (and sometimes still) she was always the boss! Jules, at the time, had great notions of becoming a nurse, and me, at just five or six years old, already knew doctor trumped nurse. Finally I’d be the boss. Mwahahaaaa! Fast forward a few years to the day I got diabetes. It didn’t take long to change my mind about wanting to become a doctor, what with the long hospital stays, trips to the ER, endless amounts of blood-sucking needle jabs. No thank you. Thanks for

Why I run…

I run for my health. I run for my happiness. I run for my equilibrium. I run for my sanity. I run to clear my mind. I run to settle my emotions. I run to rid myself of daily toxins. I run to keep my weight in line. I run to keep my blood sugars in check. I run to give Dear Diabetes a big, fat F.U. with my middle finger. I run to experience the thrill of the endorphins. I run for that boost of natural caffeine. I run for the scenic views. I run for the new adventures. I run for the exhilaration of the warm, summer breeze slapping my face. I run for the bragging rights. I run for the competition, the challenge, the notion of bettering myself with every turnover I make. I run because I love to run. And when I can’t run, when something
