Going public

A question that would have horrified me 15-20 years ago actually had me quite appreciative to answer today. It started with a trip to the Service Canada office this morning, where I had to go and change my last name on my Social Insurance Number. Seems I neglected to do so after Big Ring and I got married three years ago, but supposedly needed to do in order to apply for maternity leave EI. (I say supposedly because after waiting at the office f.o.r.e.v.e.r., and complaining about it on Facebook, I found out from several friends of mine that they too didn’t bother changing their names and had no problems obtaining maternity leave EI! What the?). On the 10-minute walk back to work, a young man, called out to me from behind: YM: “Excuse me ma’am (ouch!), I don’t mean to be a bother but what’s that thing in your […]

UPDATE: Don’t you dare quit on me

With regards to yesterday’s post, I first want to thank everyone for the comments, messages and encouragements sent my way. And second, I want to make it clear that in no way was I trying to discredit or come down on anyone who has had a caesarean section for whatever reason. That was not the point I was trying to make at all. The point I am making is that once again it feels like I’m being treated as a label, not an individual, that the doctors are looking at me as a type-1 diabetic, not as a person who has had a healthy pregnancy, that they’re quitting on me, simply because of my diabetes, before they even have a chance to see what I can do. And that frustrates the tears right out of me! Sure, the idea of not having to go through the pain and endurance of labour

The big ‘C’

I’m not Brittany, and I’m not Christina. I’ve run marathons, half marathons, countless other races. I’ve ridden up the demanding hills of Horseshoe Bay on my bike, and twice in one day up Jericho. I can climb the Grouse Grind in a respectable 55 minutes. And I thought, as scary as the prospect is (just like all those other things once were) I could surely compete in childbirth too. The docs, however, seem to have other ideas. A couple weeks ago my obstetrician asked what my intentions were regarding childbirth. It’s not the first time I’ve been asked this question, so I was prepared, and instantly said I wanted to go the natural way. She gave me a questionable look (apparently the size of my  hippopotamus thumb-sucking alien baby is cause for concern) but left it there merely saying, well we won’t know whether the baby will be able to

34 weeks: Ye olde crawdad

First they called me fat and now they’re telling me I might have an old crawdad for a placenta. Seriously, what gives? I thought placentas were scary before, but that’s just freak nasty! Okay, maybe she didn’t actually say crawdad, but the vacation relief endocrinologist at the diabetes in pregnancy clinic yesterday did warn me that the recent low blood sugars on my charts could be the result of an “old” placenta, to which her colleagues – the clueless nurse and evil dietitian – backed up. Are you freaking kidding me? Seriously, for people who work with insanely hormonal pregnant chicks on a regular basis, I’m thinking they probably should have come up with a better word than old! I went into this appointment prepared for the comments I thought for sure I’d get over a few of the highs recorded on my chart. I had explanations for nearly every single

I win! I win! I win!

Back in the day, I used to be real good at winning things: an ugly bike helmet, a jar full of vintage buttons, concert tickets, a year’s supply of natural energy drinks – you name it, I could win it. But as the years progressed, my winning streak fizzled. Until yesterday. When I got up yesterday morning and checked my email, there was a notification of a link to my blog from another. I clicked on the link to see what it was all about, and was brought over to Sara’s blog at Moments of Wonderful, which had posted a list of the Best ‘Betes Blogs of the last month. And guess who was number 2 on the list? Me! For Best Vlog!!! I WIN! I WIN! I WIN! For those of you who didn’t check it out when I first posted it, here’s a refresher. It’s just two minutes
