Run Around The Rosie

The sun, it can be a blessing in one hand, and a Dementor in another – sucking all life out of a speedy run!

I love the longer days. I love being able to head out for a run as soon as Big Ring gets home from work and still be in daylight hours. I love being able to go out in shorts and a tank top, and not have to layer up to a Pillsbury Dough Girl state. I love the colours of the flowers, the smells of the evening barbecues, and the happy chatter all around me. #Blessing

The sun and daffodils = a perfect spring day!

However, the people, well, there’s a lot left to be desired there let me just say. (Yes, yes, I know, that happy chatter is coming from those same people… so maybe it’s the happy chatter – FROM AFAR – I like ;))

When I hit the road for my super speedy run last night, I had completely forgot it was Easter Monday and that the majority of people get Easter Monday as a holiday. It was 5:30 p.m., and the boardwalk was still chock-a-block full of people desperate to lick up the last of the day’s sun rays. There were families, young kids, teenagers, a couple adults drinking beers (yes boys, despite you covering the front of the can, I still spotted that Budweiser label from half a mile away!). There were dogs, big dogs, small dogs, even a bunny on a leash. There were smokers (why, I do not know) and groups galore walking five by each. #Dementors

My speedy run fast became more a Ring Around The Rosie run trying to circle around the dogs excitedly bounding towards me, or the daydreamer jetting out in front of me with just a stride or two away from me plowing right through her, or the kids, oh those kids, bless their hearts, up to a certain age they have characteristics uncannily similar to dogs… oh come on now, don’t look at your screen with such a shocked face, you were thinking it 😉

I love you sun. I love your makeup. I love your warmth. I love your rainbow glow. It’s just, sometimes, I’d prefer if you were just mine, all mine… insert evil mwahahhaaa laugh here. Hehe 😀

YESTERDAY’S SPEED:

  • 5:15 p.m. BG before: 7.4
  • Temp. basal: none (had 3 crackers with peanut butter (20 grams carbs) 1.5 hours prior)
  • Distance: 7.83 km — 5′ warmup/6’1’1’1 x 4/ 5′ cool down
  • Time: 45:04 minutes
  • Average pace: 5:32 min/km
  • Fastest pace: 3:06 min/km (trust me, I didn’t keep that going!)
  • 6:30 p.m. BG after: 8.1
  • Post-run bolus: 1 unit

When I read my schedule for the evening, I was a bit confused with how I was supposed to run the intervals. The 6’1’1’1 was 6 minutes fast, 1 minute run like a kid, 1 minute recovery, 1 minute run like a kid and repeat. What I couldn’t figure out was how fast was the 6 minutes supposed to be? Was it tempo speed? Or was it push ’til you puke speed? So, I fired off an email to my coach, but unfortunately, given that I sent the email late in the afternoon, she didn’t respond until I was already on my run. (Note to self, check the schedule a week in advance so that if I have questions I can ask AHEAD of time!) It was supposed to be push ’til you puke, but I went tempo. Oops.

And yet, even with the somewhat slower effort I gave, I did at times feel like my lungs were about to explode; probably something to do with that 3:06 speed! And post run, my gawd, my ankles, calves, groin, thighs, heck, even my toes, felt like they had a boa constrictor squeezing them ever tighter!

Thank goodness for my old pal Mr. Foam Roller, and for friends with the most AWESOME massage machines EVER 😀

  1. I always say that young kids are like dogs. They just grow up and out of the dog phase faster.
and what is that nifty massage thing? WANT!
