Insulin pump

Syringes vs. Infusions

For nearly four years I have not known the feel of a syringe, the gentle ease at which it slides in under the skin, the smooth, non-evasiveness of its short metal tip, and the non-existent flinches, pinches, and pokes that often result with infusions. I was happy not knowing… The day after Jog for the Bog my blood sugars went into a panicked state. Almost right from the moment I got up they were high, not overly high, but high enough for me to be annoyed. I kept giving myself extra doses of insulin in an effort to bring the sugars down, but none worked. By dinner, they were 11.5, and creeping up into the Holy crap, what the hell is going on??? hyperglycemic zone. More insulin. Two hours later they were 15.8. More insulin. One hour later, they were 16.8. At this point, most people would probably change out […]

Diabetes experiment: FAIL

I knew when I got pregnant having a baby would be expensive. I knew we’d have to make sacrifices, trips would be postponed, hair appointments wouldn’t be as regular, and my obsession with expensive jeans would have to be put on the back burner. But what I didn’t realize is how much of a struggle it would be living on a maternity leave pittance with a take home that is more than 50 per cent less than what I’d be making if I were working. Every month I feel like I’m struggling, I feel poor, like I’m on the edge of living out of a cardboard box. But, in reality, I’m not. It’s just Big Ring and I refuse to live off credit cards and lines of credit, and we’re not wanting to dip into our travel fund or savings accounts, but rather live within our means. And because of

Why doesn’t the insulin pump…

Dear Insulin Pump, Can you believe it’s already been three years, three months, and 72 days since we were first introduced? Wow! Remember back when I wanted nothing to do with you, I wouldn’t give you the time of day, didn’t even want to meet you, let alone be attached to you. I thought for sure you’d be more hindrance than improvement. But look at us now; we’re practically inseparable! I love that you give me my daily insulin requirements, that you take the difficulties out of figuring out the carb-to-insulin math ratios, and that, over the years, you’ve become more stylish with your colours, going from boring black to flashy green. Essentially, you are the accessory I just can’t live without. However, I do think it’s high time you change your style. Hey, hey, don’t look at me with those sad eyes, I love you pal, but everyone needs

Diabetes cure: here we go again

It’s a plane. It’s a rocket. It’s a CURE FOR DIABETES!!! No. Wait. It’s not. I am late to this blog topic table, like really late, and quite frankly, I’m completely okay with that. You see, I am not as ingrained into the diabetes online community as maybe I should be. My blog roll isn’t bursting with diabetes-related blogs, just a handful really, and for the most part, I tune into the Twitterverse in peaks and valleys. And so, when the events of last week unfolded, with regards to a supposed major cure breakthrough, I was completely, totally, 100 per cent out of the loop. In fact, because my eyes and brain have been so focused on studying for my chemistry final (seriously, whoever thought that language up must have been on crack) I’ve even fallen behind on the blogs I do read, and so, it wasn’t until late last
