Nightmare on T-1 street

It’s not like it should have come as a surprise, but it did, and my gawd, it scared the freaking bejesus out of me. Last night I woke up in a panic. I couldn’t find Little Ring, I thought I’d fallen asleep with him on my chest, but he wasn’t there. I started frantically overturning my fortress of pillows, so sure I was suffocating my boy underneath. I shook Big Ring awake, I needed help, but I couldn’t get the words out, my tongue was twisted, my body was shaking, I had a fountain of sweat coming down from my forehead. On the verge of tears, I lifted my dead weight of a body up, and desperately shot my eyes over to the bassinet – where my sweet boy was sleeping ever so peacefully. I hadn’t yet clued into what was going on, but Big Ring had. Not showing an […]

Sleepless in Baby Town

You know you’ve turned into a zombie when… You forget to put deodorant on consecutive days in a row… You eat dinner with your breast (which was just used as an appetizer for the little one) hanging out the entire time… You spend a good portion of the morning packing a lunch, book, and breast pump for your first day sans Little Ring only to forget the bag on the city bus… You can’t figure out the simplest of Facebook tasks, like how to delete a status mistake, that otherwise you’d have no problem doing on much more rested days…. You spend a good hour trying to find out what the heck is beeping, thinking for sure it’s the barbecue needing more gas, only to realize later, it was you who was beeping the whole time… well, the 10 units left alarm on the insulin pump, that is…. And you

New cyclist on the block

Oh yes he did… So the other day Big Ring came charging up the stairs, bubbles of excitement bursting out of him. He had a surprise, something he wanted to keep a secret, but something that was so brilliant, he just could not hold it in any longer than the mere seconds he already had. “Guess what I got for Little Ring,” he shouted, a beaming smile on his face. “What?” I asked. “Guess!” “A new book?” “Nope.” “A 60-inch plasma?” “Nope.” “A rocket ship that would put Superman in the dirt?” “Nope.” He looked at me like I should have known, like I was crazy for guessing the guesses I had guessed, and when he couldn’t take it anymore, he blurted the surprise out… “I GOT HIM A BABY CYCLING SUIT!!!” Yep, you read that correctly. My baby is just over a month old and already has his first

Hospitals, the sewers of health

Hospitals, a place of health? I don’t think so; they’re more like the sewers of health! It had been years since I had had to stay overnight in a hospital prior to Little Ring’s birth day, and I don’t know if I’d forgotten what it was like, or just didn’t care back in the day, but I tell you, I haven’t felt quite so unhealthy as I did there in a long, long time. A three-day stay and my diabetes was on the most rickety roller coaster around. The reason: The food. The first nurse I saw was set on putting me on the diabetes meal plan. I knew this was a bad idea. I had learned years ago, on my first plane ride, never to opt for the diabetes-specialty meal over a “regular” person’s meal, because while everyone else was eating hearty sandwiches and Kit Kat bars, I was

TSAB 1 of 3: Blue moon

So, I guess I’ve got to stop calling him my little thumb-sucking alien baby, hey 😀 He did not come out with two heads or green antennae, I have yet to see him suck his thumb (although he is a fan of sucking his whole fist) and my gawd he is not little – 8 lbs, 10 oz and 20.5 inches long, which I swear are all legs! Mind you, calling him my Baby Cavendish or my Little Usain Bolt is not out of the question. Just 11 days old, and he’s already got his victory pose down! Last Thursday, I was induced, one week before the originally planned for induction date, and three weeks before his actual due date. Big Ring and I knew it could take hours, maybe even days before things got going, so we made sure we were prepared. Laptop, check. IPod, check. Girly book, check.
