The blood cannon

Crazy thing happened to me this morning. Well actually, to be honest, a couple crazy things happened. First, I decided to set the alarm for 5 a.m. which NEVER happens. See, I was recently challenged by Big Brother (unbeknownst to him) to workout in the mornings. He’s been boasting all about his new found love of morning workouts, how they make him less scary in the morning, more talkative, and energized for the whole day. And so, I thought, if he can do it (he is NOT a morning person) I can do it. So last night, I set the alarm fully intending to ride the bike trainer for 45 minutes before going to work. But when I got up to use the washroom at 3:40 a.m., I was already negotiating my way out of the plan. And when the alarm went off, the last thing I wanted to do […]

SURPRISE!!!

Want to know a secret? Do you? Do you really want to know? Okay, I’ll tell you: I can keep a secret! SURPRISE!!! 😀 This was a questionable thing. My family has never been good at keeping secrets, we get so excited about things that we are just bursting at the seams to spill the beans. It comes from the top. My moms  is the worst (sorry moms!). She tries to keep her mouth shut, tries with all her might, but she just can’t do it. Case in point: Christmas gift exchange. Every year my family draws names, and a good portion of us try to guess who has who. Obviously I start with my moms. But this year, she swore up and down that she was not going to tell, oh no, “it was a secret,” she said. But without further prodding she continued, “all I’ll tell you is

What would you do?

Hmm… well now, this is an odd predicament I’ve found myself in. I got an email today from a fairly well known candy producer (one of which I happen to love to reach for when my blood sugars are low) suggesting I join their online community. Apparently they produce no-sugar added products and have partnered with the Canadian Diabetes Association to create this networking community of like-minded diabetics such as myself. If I join, they will publish the title of my blog posts, as well as the first few sentences of each post. And if their readers want to see the full article, they will then be pushed to my site. The obvious benefits are increased exposure, increased traffic to my blog, and a forum to connect with other diabetics. Seems win-win, especially given that I set out this year to double my blog traffic by the end of the

Goodbye hand cramps

It’s only taken 24 years – nearly a quarter of a century of nagging, eye rolling, chastising, throwing up arms in exasperation, cajoling, negotiating before I finally found a BG log book that would actually entice me to regularly record my readings. And I would have gone another 24 years easy (I’m not stubborn, not at all) had it not been for the recent discovery of Maxwell Software’s Glucose Companion iPhone app. I may be a good diabetic, but it didn’t matter what the doctors, the specialists, the nurses, the moms said or did, I was not going to write my blood sugars down. I have spent many years frantically recording my blood sugars on the night before my specialist’s appointment, or even worse, on the drive in. And every one always rolled their eyes, commenting that wouldn’t it be easier if I just wrote them down when I took

Nightmare of sweaty proportions

I know I’m not supposed to do it, and I’ve been real good for quite some time – quite some time! – but sometimes it’s just unavoidable. The doctor had to be summoned. Google Doctor that is. And let me just say copious amounts of calming tea with Bob the Bauble (distant relative of Johnny 5) were needed in dealing with the diagnosis(s) The following information I’m about to spew, I have hemmed and hawed over whether or not to share it. It’s pretty personal, and a little bit embarrassing… actually, scratch that, it’s a lot embarrassing. But when I started this blog almost two years ago, one of the reasons was to connect with a like-minded community, whether that be fellow runners, cyclists, type 1s, etc. So, here goes… [Note: If any of you make fun of me, I will not be opposed to kicking you in the knees.
