Seven things you didn’t know

I want a pig, a cute, cuddly pink pig, always have, but was never granted that wish no matter how many times I wished upon a star, or wished upon a fallen eyelash, or the better half of the turkey wishbone. And no matter how many times I read Charlotte’s Web or how many times I left the baby Miss Piggy McDonald’s kids pack toy on my mom’s pillow, I never got me my little piggy. But more on that later…

Fellow blogger Canadian D-gal recently honoured me with the versatile blogger award, an award that comes with stipulations. With this award, I’m supposed to:

  1. Thank the person who gave the award.
  2. Share seven things about myself.
  3. Pass the award on to 12 bloggers who I think are fantastic.

So here goes, seven things you didn’t know:

1. Ever since I was seven years old I have wanted a pig. It all started when my moms came up to me one evening, while I was lying belly down on the living room floor, watching TV, in the house on Oak Avenue. She told me to pick an animal, any animal and I could have it. See, we were moving to the country, and I’m pretty sure my moms thought her sweet little girl was going to pick what every girl, especially a girl who loved her My Little Ponies like I did, wants in life: a horse. I, however, was not like every girl. I wanted a pig. I did NOT get that pig. But I’m not bitter, ohhhh no. (We did however get cows to which my brothers named them: Big Mac, Quarter Pounder, T-Bone, Sirloin, and Porter House!) I even have the perfect name picked out for my little piggie: Bacon!

2. I also want a dog: A Great Dane!!! Have I mentioned that I live in a 900 square foot condo? But seriously, with the great name that I have for my Great Dane, how could I not want one: Godzilla, God for short. Brilliant. And if I were ever to have a boxer, his name would be Rocky Balboa, not Rocky, not Balboa. Rocky Balboa!

3. I have a scar in the middle of my forehead that goes from my hairline right down to the line of my eyebrows. How did I get this scar? Well, I was six years old, and I was intrigued with this golf putter thingy that my dad had. So I picked up the golf club and started trying to hit the ball into the putter but kept missing over and over again. Finally my big sister pushed me aside and said, here, let me show you. She clasped her hands around the shaft, swung back, and OHMYGAWD! that club went right through my forehead – right through it! My sister grabbed my mouth. My brother grabbed my forehead. And both of them, with the fear of God in their eyes, frantically whispered “Don’t tell mom! Don’t tell mom!” My moms nearly passed out from the sight of the blood gushing from my forehead. And they wonder why I don’t play golf!

4. My moms is a superhero, my superhero. She survived my screams of whooping cough at two weeks old, my appendix nearly bursting at three, my diabetes diagnosis at nine, and my diabetes rebellion at 10 when I thought it better her plants get my insulin than me. And when I was 11 years old, and she got the call from my elementary school that a young man had found me passed out in a ditch on a major truck traffic route (apparently he thought I was his dead dog!) I to this day have no idea how she survived that. Super. Hero. Beat that She-Ra! So here’s what happened. My blood sugars went low in the afternoon when I was in the school library reading, and the words in the book started bouncing all over the page – seriously! – but I didn’t really understand why. I got on the wrong bus home, and I remember jetting back and forth across the busy road with huge semi trucks zooming past. That’s the last thing I remember before waking up on a stretcher in a stranger’s house. I jumped off that stretcher so quick screaming at the top of my lungs for my moms. The paramedics promised me if I got back on the stretcher they’d take me to my moms, but when the ambulance didn’t turn at the four-way stop where it should have to go to my house, apparently (I don’t remember doing this) I slugged the paramedic! He told my moms at the hospital I had a nice right hook 😀

5. My family is everything to me. Friends come and friends go, but my family has always held strong. My siblings, my parents, my husband, my best friends. I was never the most popular girl in school and I didn’t want to be, I don’t have 500 “friends” on Facebook and I don’t want that many, but I do have the most amazing husband, parents, three brothers, two sisters, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, three nieces, four nephews, and two more on the way. Really, what more could a princess ask for?

My big family before we got huge … can you spot me?

6. My favourite book of all time is Catcher in the Rye. I never had to read it in school, in fact, I got admonished once by my Grade 12 typing teacher Ms. Dyck for reading it in class even though I was already done all the typing exercises she had assigned. The funny thing, though, I only started reading it because I had a huge crush on Ethan Hawke (hello, Reality Bites!) and I read an interview with him in Seventeen Magazine where he expressed his love for Catcher in the Rye. I had to have it!

7. I’ve always wanted to be a writer, that’s no secret. But not too many people know that there was a time where I considered going to law school (I’m pretty good at arguing and complaining) and I still somedays find myself wondering what if?

So there you go, seven things you didn’t know – all thanks to Canadian D-gal.

Now, here’s where I stray from the rules of the award. Rather than tell a whole bunch of other bloggers what they have to do, I’m just going to list a few of the bloggers I’m really enjoying right now:

Lil Veggie Patch: I’m somewhat biased as I love this girl personally, but I also love her blogworldly too. If you ever need tips on the most perfect oatmeal concoctions, Katie’s your gal.
Runner’s Kitchen: Katie was also the one who hooked me on to Megan at Runner’s Kitchen when I was training for my marathon. And while I’m pretty positive I won’t ever run the speeds this chick runs (she was in the elite group for this year’s New York Marathon) she was a huge inspiration during my training and still is.
Eat Live Run: I love seeing all the new recipes Jenna posts and her pretty pictures that go with the foods too.
The Type 1 Game: This is a dad writing about his daughter’s journey through the diabetes world, and for someone like me who went through it as a kid, it’s really interesting to see the other side, the parent’s side.
The Big Ring: Well, I couldn’t possibly leave this one out of the list, he is my husband after all 😀 writing about all things cycling, all things traveling, all things cold, pretty much all things!

What blogs are you reading right now?
