Book Club: Simple days

I’m not sure when exactly I started reading the newspaper, but it was pretty early on. We always had a paper in the house and being the magnet for words that I was, I was drawn to them. I leafed through the community papers, read my horoscope in the dailies, shared the comics with my dad, and on Sunday mornings, as he drank his coffee and read his paper, I’d be sitting right next to him snatching up the discarded sections. Newspapers have always been apart of my life, and I always thought they would be. It was on my 14th birthday when I decided to go into journalism. I had just read my horoscope in the morning paper, and in addition to it telling me that I shared the same birthday as Marky Mark Wahlberg, it also said that I was destined to be a journalist. Obviously I took […]

Work is like a box of chocolates

I have run with five pound weights in my hands, newly purchased high heels in my hands, and as of this evening, wine bottles in my hands. But let’s rewind here for a sec. My favourite co-worker and I decided to purchase a bottle of wine for one of the local politicians. Now, before you start thinking ohhh that’s not very journalistic, hear me out on this. Every year Politician brings each of us a box of Purdy’s chocolates and we all know how much I do so love my chocolate. Yep, even politicians can win me over with a box of chocolates. So after the second year of him doing this, I came to expect it, so much so, that two years ago I wrote him a letter on the first of December asking him where my chocolates were? Last year, I called him up: “Hello Politician,” I greeted

Dear Santa…

For the past eight days, I have been in full-fledged gloating mode. I know it’s not proper to gloat, but I just can’t help it when I see 98 per cent of the world flocking to the malls, elbowing their way through the mind-numbing hustle and bustle of mass-produced goods, when I’m at home, relaxing with my tea, looking at the stacks of presents that have been wrapped for months already. Yep, I am one of those shoppers. Done my shopping by November at the very latest, often starting in the young summer months. But I know, I know, not everyone can be as prepared as me, namely those who go by Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas, and Father Christmas. But stress not, my dear, sweet jolly elfs, because I have prepared for you my annual letter: I like to think of us as friends, don’t you? Thirty two years I’ve

It’s a small world after all

Dang it! I wish I would have packed my runners this morning 🙁 A week ago that thought probably wouldn’t have entered my head. I had a barefoot-loving pilates session scheduled for this evening, why would I need my runners? But this week, a week that has spawned new goals, I’m now thinking why the heck didn’t I pack my runners? My pilates wasn’t until 7:30 and I had all my running gear packed other than my shoes. I could have banged out a 5k and eaten dinner with my parents before I would have had to leave for the studio no problem. Dammit! For several years now, long before I made this commitment to the pilates world, I’ve been driving past the studio on the way to my parent’s house and my eyes for some strange reason have always stopped short on the house. I thought it had to

Reunification

My legs AND brain are feeling the motivation – thanks to all of you! Not even 24 hours after writing Thursday’s plea for help on how to get my butt running out the door, I committed myself to yet another marathon. That’s right, folks, I am not waiting until the fall as planned, I’m doing it now – with the most amazing running chicks ever. It’s what I need. I can tell myself to go for a run over and over again, but without a goal in sight it’s like the never-ending battle of negotiation going on inside my head. A battle where my love of running tends to lose more times than I’d like to admit. So on Friday morning when one of my girls informed me of the Run for Water marathon (a first time marathon) being held this spring in the Valley, it just seemed right. While
