Only in France

When I asked yesterday if there was one race you could do what would it be, I neglected to share with you what my race would be. So, here you are, a list of my dream races. • Nike Women’s Race, San Francisco, October: Of course I’d love to do this race, what girl wouldn’t with a Tiffany’s necklace waiting for you at the finish line and the beautiful, hilly – I LOVE HILLS! – San Francisco scenery cascading all around you. • Le Marathon du Médoc, Bordeaux, September: This is a wine-lover’s must. There’s 23 water wine stations, otherwise known as vineyards, on the route, which in addition to the region’s finest wines, also serve breads, cheeses, oysters, steak and other such local delicacies. Only in France. • Team Diabetes Marathon, Rome, March: Someday I would very much like to do a marathon that raises money for diabetes research and I’d love […]

Make a wish

It was Mario’s birthday yesterday, and for a good two weeks I had been near bursting with the surprise I had planned for him. I was sure this year’s present would beat the XBox 360 I got him a few years ago, and the Florence-like restaurant that I had transformed our kitchen into last year, with menus, meal and all. And before he tore into the paper, I told him to make a wish, I told him I wanted to make him as happy as he’s made me all these years … yep, I got all sappy. Granted, I also told him there was not a 3D TV or an iPad for that matter in the gift-giving repertoire, so don’t wish for that. Given his reaction, I think I did good. Wine country, here we come! On Jan. 17, at 9 a.m. Pacific Standard Time, I will be on the

Photographic memory, yes please

I wish I had a photographic memory. I wish I could look at a piece of paper, like say my list of Pilates exercises and remember which one comes next. I wish I could watch a demonstration, like say my Pilates exercises, and remember exactly how I’m supposed to do those exercises from class to class without helpful prompting. But noooooo, my simple brain requires poking and prodding and pushing and nudging to make it work and even then it’s a struggle to remember simple things, like say the bird on a wire Pilates exercise.  Lisbeth Salander, I so envy you. Okay, soooo I probably wouldn’t enjoy being a social outcast that much, or have people wanting to kill me everywhere I turned, or have to go into hiding from the good guys and the bad guys, or be put in a pyscho ward, or have someone control my money

Shape up or get replaced

So, I’m a little concerned. Not all out scared, just timidly freaking out is all. My left ankle has been giving me grief on and off for months now, ever since before the marathon, and I kept putting off treatment, hoping it would go away, until last month when I came to the realization that the bruised feeling was not in fact going away. So I went to my physio (you can read about the visit here) and he assured me it would be fine in no time. (Side note: when I watched Natalie Portman getting her ankle reefed out in Black Swan, I felt her pain. Ouch!) Well, a month has passed and it is not fine. I am still having pains, like a deep bruised feeling just above the inner ankle. It’s not there all the time, just sometimes. Like on New Years Day when I had that

Battle of allegiances

Yesterday morning I woke up with one focus: I was going to make it a great day. I got the idea from a recently retired official in the school district I report on. He always ended his conversations with that statement, and it always made me giggle. It is kind of corny after all 😀 But this guy always had a smile on his face and was always friendly-like even when I was asking him tough questions that others might have bristled at. And after having such a great New Year’s weekend, I didn’t want it to end, so I took a page from his book. I was going to have a great day. And when it was a day that included going to the Abbotsford Heat vs. Manitoba Moose hockey game with my big brother, how could it be anything but? “SuperMattMan” contacted me late the night before asking
