The Rogue Marathoner

Ok, so the Running Room marathon clinic started tonight, but for all the talking I’ve been doing, I hadn’t yet signed up for it. I had every intention in the world to sign up, I even got off the highway yesterday to stop in at the store, but then changed my mind and got right back on the highway. Now, in my defense, firstly I thought I still had a couple of weeks to get everything done, and secondly, I’ve been flipping and flopping on whether or not I should sign up for the Abbotsford clinic (I’m a regular at that store) or the Burnaby one, which is closer to home. So, I showed up at the store tonight with every intention in the world to skulk in the back and hopefully go unnoticed. I was gonna be all Elmer Fudd like “Shhhhhhh“. I was even calling myself the Rogue […]

Real Man THAT!

Well now, I hate to gloat, buuuuuuuuut, haha! 😀 Why the laugh you ask, well, I’ll tell you. Some of you may recall how two months ago I was in the midst of a group of men picking hockey stars for our fantasy hockey playoff pool, which is named the ‘Real Man’s‘ hockey pool. Myself and one other gal were the only females in the mix. And while the guys and the other gal had their eyes glued to sheets of paper filled with “important” stats and predictions and comparisons and who knows what else they were looking at, me, I kept it simple – I drafted based on looks. Ever since I joined the ‘Real Man’s’ hockey pool five years ago, I’ve been relentlessly razzed for my strategy. Some have rolled their eyes, some have shook their heads in disbelief, some have been outright vocal about their disdain for

Guilt wins the gym battle

Gadzooks, that was a short-lived countdown! Yesterday I was living in a comfort bubble, thinking I still had 17 days before marathon training started, but, unfortunately for me, the bubble burst. Turns out, I can’t count. What I thought was 17 days is actually now two days. That’s right, marathon training starts on Thursday – thanks for the reality check Lori! I spent the better part of last night and this morning freaking out, second guessing whether I was ready to start training. Hypochondriac syndrome roiled through my head: Is that a pain in my foot? Is my hip acting up? Am I out of alignment again? What if I can’t do it? What if I injure yet another part of me? What if? What if? What if? My boss, who’s completed four marathons (one with horrible, worn-out shoes … he doesn’t advise I do that) helped calm the nerves a

Getting me some Ironchickie inspiration

Now that the birthday has come and gone, a new countdown is on the brain: 17 days until Marathon Training! Eek! To start off the countdown, I went for a run tonight with my New Zealand girlfriend Hilary (love her accent!) who just happens to be a crazy (yes, I said crazy) Ironman chickie. But not just any Ironman, oh no, she’s like an Ironstar! In her last race, the New Zealand Ironman in March, she placed first in her age category (25-29) and finished the race in 10 hours and 41 minutes, and had shaved off an hour from the first Ironman she did in 2008. And get this, she only just learned how to swim at 21! You’d think that after a race like that, she’d take a bit of a breather. But no, she qualified for the Kona Ironman in Hawaii, and was headhunted by Team New

A perfect (birth) day

Well now, how’s this for a great start to a great year: I figured out the carb count on last night’s birthday ice cream cake to perfection AND I figured out the carb count for this morning’s breakfast waffles, which I have struggled with since getting the pump six months ago – and I love waffles! Exactly one year ago, on my birthday, Mario and I were touring Barcelona, checking out the so-called “world’s largest aquarium,” which was a bit of a letdown (but honestly, I haven’t found an aquarium that can stack up against Vancouver’s aquarium, which, in a word, is amazing) and getting swarmed by butterflies in Montjuic, and drooling over the footprint of Rafael Nadal … ok maybe that was just me 🙂 This year’s birthday was a bit more low-key (you can’t go to Barcelona every year!) but it was amazing nonetheless. The phone started ringing at
