Gadzooks, that was a short-lived countdown! Yesterday I was living in a comfort bubble, thinking I still had 17 days before marathon training started, but, unfortunately for me, the bubble burst. Turns out, I can’t count. What I thought was 17 days is actually now two days. That’s right, marathon training starts on Thursday – thanks for the reality check Lori!
I spent the better part of last night and this morning freaking out, second guessing whether I was ready to start training. Hypochondriac syndrome roiled through my head: Is that a pain in my foot? Is my hip acting up? Am I out of alignment again? What if I can’t do it? What if I injure yet another part of me? What if? What if? What if?
My boss, who’s completed four marathons (one with horrible, worn-out shoes … he doesn’t advise I do that) helped calm the nerves a bit, and memories of last night’s run with that freaking IronStar friend of mine, also helped give me some crazy courage.
My new mantra (well, until the next one that is): I can do it. I will do it. So there! 😀
So, as most of you know, I’ve been struggling with getting my butt to the gym lately. But after about a month of lamenting and complaining about it, but not actually doing anything about it, finally – finally! – my guilty side prevailed! I had had a pretty busy day at work, and a somewhat frustrating drive home (is it ever not frustrating?) and was in a bit of a mood when I walked through the condo doors. Mario was heading out for a road ride, and I was kinda zoning out on the couch, when something – my guilty persona perhaps – just kind of clicked. I walked up the stairs, tied my hair back, put on a gym shirt and shorts and headed down the stairs to the gym.
It was a pretty good workout, I was dripping in sweat, which I think is exactly what I needed to clear my head. But seriously, what my condo building calls a gym is so NOT a gym. I didn’t want to workout on the treadmill tonight, so my only other options was the elliptical trainer, which is falling apart, and a bike, but not a stationary bike – a spinning bike! What the heck? The condo building across the way has all this state-of-the-art equipment with multiple stations of treadmills and elliptical trainers and stairmasters and real stationary bikes, and weight machines galore, and all we have is a bloody spinner! I so have condo envy 🙁
Maybe it’s time I lobby the strata for improved equipment … or just become the strata president and do it myself. Hmm, now that’s an idea 😀
- 6:30 p.m. BG before: 6.4 (granola bar 1/2 bolus)
- 20 minutes elliptical trainer, hills, level 7
- 30 minutes strength training: bench press, leg press, hamstring pull, 3 repetitions of 12 each PLUS situps!!! I actually did situps, 40 in total, but was shaking at 28 – no abdominal strength whatsoever!
- 5 minutes stretching
- 7:30 p.m. BG after: 3.6 (Yikes!)
