It has been 51 days, or if you prefer 7 weeks and 4 days since my marathon, and in those days and weeks I have run a total of 7 km give or take, not really a whole heck of a lot if you ask me. And yet, for some strange reason, I felt compelled to sign myself up for the Resolution Run on New Years Day, which in itself could be considered crazy, but the fact that I haven’t been on the road much should be somewhat concerning don’t you think? Mind you, it is only a 5 km race and I can run 5 km in my sleep. But in the same token, it’s 5 km, I should be able to run 5 km at a nice speedy clip. But if I continue down this road of non running, I’m not going to be running very soundly New Years morning.
I need motivation.
And here’s where we talk about Mario. Remember him? The Running Athiest? The guy who’s made fun of us runners for as long as he’s pretty much been riding a bike? The guy who can ride his bike for five hours through sun, rain, up killer hills, across bridges, traveling through city after city, but who can’t wrap his head around why a runner would want to do the same? Well, I take the guy out for one run – ONE RUN – and suddenly The Running Athiest has become The Pushy Let’s Get Our Butts Out The Doors And Run Runner!
Ohhh but he’s not a runner (she says sarcastically) he’s just “accompanying” me. I so beg to differ. Because if that were the case, he wouldn’t have asked me several times since the last run two weeks ago when we’d be going on another, he wouldn’t have gotten himself all dressed for a run before I got home from work last night, he wouldn’t have done a little jig in the kitchen when I agreed to a run, and he wouldn’t have told me this morning, “I think I’ll start going on runs by myself when you’re not available.” Because that, my dear Running Athiest, is all things a runner does 😀
But, being the stubborn one that he is, he’ll probably now say he’s just “motivating” me! But hey, if he gets me out running again, even just for short runs, it works for me.
LAST NIGHT’S RUN:
- 7 p.m. BG before: 7.7
- Temp basal: -50 per cent
- Distance: 4 km (approximate)
- Time: 30 minutes (approximate)
- 7:45 p.m. BG after: 3.2 (Yikes!)
We ran down the quay shortly after dinner, to which I was reminded of the reason why I don’t run after meals – I thought for sure my omelet was going to be coming up and out for half the run! I had hoped my Garmin would pick up a satellite, as I’d wanted to check on our pace, but given that it hadn’t been turned on for the last two months and given that the area is surrounded by condo towers, that just wasn’t going to happen.
I felt pretty good, aside from the upchuck feeling, although it seems my nasty habit of kicking my left ankle hasn’t gone away in the running hiatus. I thwacked it pretty hard early on and for the rest of the run, it was feeling rather tender. And I think I may have actually bruised it, the bloody thing hurts like hell today!
How do you motivate yourself back into a running routine after a hiatus?
I’m still working on it! It’s just been way to cold out there for me! I am thinking of going to run in the indoor track here, maybe tomorrow…we’ll see! I charged the I-P-O-D, and the kids can play in the field in the middle…AND I am soo craving the exercise, so I just think that’s what we’re gonna do tomorrow morning! If I can do it, you can do it for sure!
When’s Mario going to run a Marathon?? 🙂
That’s tough. motivation after a hiatus is hard and I don’t know why! I try to motivate myself by NOT thinking of the present and thinking of a few weeks down the road when I’m back to speed. Cuz those first few runs are usually uncomfortable. That, and a new mix on my ipod 😉
It is tough to get back into a running routine without a goal race in the forecast. That is the motivation! New goals.
Come do the Polar Bear swim after the Resolution Run with us 😉
Oh Katie,
I introduced Manfred to dragon boating and you know what that did to him. Then last year after many years of him watching me run he did the Sun Run.
He has just started his “pre-training” to another Sun Run training program. He wants to do the run faster!
Look what you’ve started with Mario.
Enjoy.
Congrats on “converting” an “atheist!”
Sign up for a big race, and get Mario signed up while he’s fired up.
I am not a huge runner, but I know that I need a lot of motivation to get back into my workout schedule! I make a plan on Sunday and when I have a plan I stick to it!!
