Failing the marathon equation

Cheesecake + chocolates + wine + late nights = running disaster!

This morning was my first 10k LSD (long slow distance) training run and you’d think I’d try to be somewhat healthy for the couple of days before the run, you know, get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy diet, stay hydrated, the usual. But no, somehow I got it in my sweet little head that 10k was nothing, I could do it in my sleep. Bring on the wine and cheesecake, and sleep, who needs that?

Turns out, I do!

How could this possibly be a bad choice???

Today’s run totally kicked my butt. My legs felt like 10 tonne bricks. My breathing was laboured. My energy levels were non-existent. And I kept checking my Garmin to see if it was time for another walk break – and all this was on a long SLOW distance run!

I didn’t get out of bed until 8:30, which was when I was supposed to be at the Running Room store (45 minutes away from where I live) for the group run. Oops. But no biggie, I thought, I’d just go out on my own, which I’d been doing for the last couple of months anyway. Ohhh but when your body and brain were in a lethargic state like mine were, getting enough gumption to actually get out the door was quite the task. As soon as I finished breakfast, I wrapped myself up in a blanket, and plopped myself down on the couch, falling in and out of sleep with the Montreal Grand Prix playing out in the background. It wasn’t until Mario took off for his ride, that I figured maybe I should get a move on myself. I didn’t get out the door until 11!!!

And you know, the sad thing about all this is that I didn’t have that much wine, just a couple of glasses,  and I only had one or two of the chocolates, and I had one of the smaller pieces of the cheesecake, and I went to bed at 11 (although, I’m pretty sure I had late-night hangover from the night before when I was baking the cheesecake). But it just goes to show you this marathon thing I’ve gotten myself into is a full-on commitment, and even just the slightest stray from “The Plan” can so totally mess with your body and brain’s makeup!

Oh but that cheesecake, so worth every laborious minute of it! Yum! 😀
