Drama on the insulin front last night. About an hour and a half after dinner I noticed that my mouth was all cottony and that I’d been going to the washroom quite frequently, which are both signs of high blood sugars. And sure enough, after pricking my finger and waiting for the bing of the glucometre, they were high – 17.3 high!!!
But it didn’t make sense. I didn’t eat anything out of the ordinary, I counted my carbs to a tee. Sure I had a glass and a half of wine, but the wine shouldn’t have shot them up like that. So I started looking at the pump. Did something go wrong with it? I checked to see how much insulin I had on board, nothing. What? There so should have been a couple of units still sticking around in my body from dinner. So I checked my bolus history. The most recent insulin dosage it showed was from 1 p.m. Lunch. What the heck? I totally forgot to give myself my dinner insulin. But I remember figuring out the carbs, and I remember inputing the carbs into my pump, and calculating how much insulin I should take – but I forgot the last step of pressing “Go” to distribute the insulin.
I always said you’d never forget to take a needle, and I never did. Now, mind you, when I was kid, I may have purposely neglected to take my needles, and possibly injected them into my mom’s plants … sorry mom. But I never inadvertently forgot! It’s kind of hard to forget to jab yourself, but as witnessed last night, it’s not so hard to forget to press a button … and I’ve caught myself a few times almost forgetting that last step, but this was the first time actually forgetting.
Any of you diabetics out there have any tips on ways to remember all the steps?
TODAY’S GYM:
- 6:15 p.m. BG before: 12.2 (I gave myself a correction bolus, but only half because I knew that the blood sugars were the result of a rebound low, and as I was heading down to the gym, I didn’t want them to bottom out again)
- Treadmill: 18 minutes, 6:86-7:46 pace per kilometre
- Weights: 3 sets of 15 each: bench press, leg press, hamstring pull
- Elliptical trainer: 7 minutes, effort level 6
- Cool down: 10 minute walk on the boardwalk
- 7:30 p.m. BG after: 5.6 = perfect!
On the way home from work, I had a “brilliant” idea of Mario and I going for a walk down the boardwalk for my cool down rather than having to spend 10 boring minutes on the treadmill (*note* I ended up having to go on the treadmill for my warmup anyway as someone was already on the elliptical trainer). So after my workout, I ran upstairs, changed into jeans and put a sweatshirt over my damp gym shirt and we headed out. Two seconds outside, though, both Mario and I realized the idea wasn’t so brilliant after all. It was friggin’ cold, like February cold!
Dreaming of that balmy New York weather – two weeks! Eeeeeeeeee!
Glad you figured out what was wrong! Please be careful, because I am PSYCHED to be seeing you in two!!!
possibly Katie??? For sure!!!
I was waiting for that comment mom … I can’t believe the hell I must have put you through … but I’m a great kid now so it’s all worth it right 😀
I think most will agree that tying a string around your finger works to remind you of almost anything. Or else people will look at you oddly and say, ‘ Hey, what’s that string around your finger for?’ You could start a fashion trend, ya know. Use different colored string? Fluffy string, curly string, that kind of thing. You could pitch it to Yves St. Laurent, I bet, when you’re in New York. You know where he lives, right?
PS That picture of your reflection in the pump was a beaut. Now, truly, whose idea was THAT!?
