There was a bit of a pummeling going on in the gym today, and I was the unfortunate victim. No, no, there were no fisticuffs coming my way, nothing like that, just a full-fledged workout whipping is all!
For the last two days my head has been stuck inside my work computer, hardly coming up for any air at all. And so last night when I got home I crashed, I could hardly keep my eyes open. But tonight, I couldn’t possibly do the same, no matter how much I wanted to. And while the numbers may not show it, my gawd, I felt like I was giving her. My face was the colour of the rhubarb tart I made earlier this week; my heart was pounding; my breath was gusting. Beads of sweat were dripping into my eyes and ears, so much so that my earbuds wouldn’t stay put, and my clothes were soaked.
- 6:10 p.m. BG before: 3.9 (orange juice and granola bar (no bolus insulin))
- 20 minutes treadmill run: 3 km, 7:08 km/h pace
- 15 minutes weights: bench press, leg press, hamstring curl, three repetitions of 12 each
- 20 minutes elliptical trainer: hills, effort level six
- 10 minutes yoga
- 7:20 p.m. BG after: 9.1
It was a nasty hard workout, and at times (especially on the elliptical) I kept staring down the clock as if my eyes would make it go faster, which made it feel even longer. But then, just as the intensity bar was about to raise up to the fifth notch, the most perfect song burst through my iPod: John Cougar Mellencamp’s Hurts So Good. Oh man, I totally started giggling … well as much as a girl with laboured breathing can giggle 🙂
How perfect that song was!
My top 10 songs to get me pumped are always changing, but right now the ones on my ‘Get out of my way!‘ playlist are:
I don’t know what it is about Green Day’s Jesus of Suburbia, Michael Jackson’s Beat It, and Destiny Child’s Survivor, but whenever I’m running and those songs come on, it’s like I instantly go into this military-like or robot-like form and everything else in me just disappears – it’s just me and the music. And the cheesiness of Christina Aguilera’s Beautiful is perfect for the end of a run, especially the way I’m singing it 😉
What songs get you going?

Oddly enough, Aguilera’s ‘Beautiful’ has the same effect on me!! Cheesey is the right word to describe it, too, but cheesey in the best possible way 🙂 I also like that song about if “Jesus was a slob like one of us” and that ‘Complicated’ song by Avril Lavigne … also some song about “waking up with a snake tattoo” 🙂 … and tell ya the truth, lately, this Sunday School song has been playing in my head that goes “When He Cometh, When He Cometh To Make Up His Jewels, All His Jewels, Precious Jewels, His loved and his own … Like the stars of the morning/his bright crown adorning/They shall shine in their beauty/Bright stars for his crown.”
Or something like that. You asked what songs get me going. Be careful what you ask for 🙂
Nice blog, by the way. Good read. Hardly any spelling mistakes 🙂
I like the vision of YOU singing Sunday school songs with your arms waiving high above your head and your body twirling round and round 🙂
