He wants 3D, she wants Godzilla

After about three weeks of near perfect blood sugar levels, they took a nosedive (actually, more like a trampoline leap) this weekend – my readings have been showing 10s, 11s, 12s, and early this morning, a disturbing 17.1! I blame the Belgian waffles, the Pilsbury cookies, and yes, maybe even a bit of the paella and beer too. I haven’t quite figured out the whole waffle thing with carb counting; Calorie King drastically underestimates them, so Mario and I have been trying to do the math ourselves … keep in mind, we’re both journalists, math does not come easily to us. It’s a 9X9″ waffle (we got the tape measure out (counted 52 grams of carbs)) with approximately a half cup of blueberries (10g), plus about three tablespoons of ED Smith syrup, give or take (7g). I love waffles, and usually have them once every couple of weeks, but I cannot […]

Waging war

The gods were against me today, oh were they ever. Practically right from the get-go I was feeling the need for a run, a good, long run to clear my head of the frustration filling every spare spot in it, but of course, I’m not yet back on the road, so a run was out of the question. But I figured, hey, a nice brisk walk on my lunch break might do the trick, sure it was cloudy out, but clouds never stopped anyone, right. So I wolfed down my lunch, looked out the window, and the skies were no longer grey, they were now black, with huge water-balloon-size raindrops pelting down. I didn’t really care to fight with my umbrella today, so a walk was also out of the question. But then I thought, hey, my condo’s equipped with a gym, maybe I’ll head down there tonight after work

Miracle therapy or desperation?

I think I may have typed too soon, or maybe I was just dreaming, or maybe, as one of my co-workers so frequently likes to tell me, I’m just delirious. But you know the other day, when I was practically dancing in the streets about being pain and fancy free? Well, today, that’s so not the case at all. Oh no, I’m like a freaking claw all clenched and hooked over with burbles of pain roiling through my neck, down my lower back and in and out of my hips – my pain nemesis! And I say BAH! to you pain. I’ll show you … with positivity! I mean, seriously, how could I possibly let the resurfacing of the pain get to me, when, on my way home from work tonight, I frantically had to stop off at my brother’s house to use the washroom (I was only a quarter

Princess fruity goodness

Oh man, I was so happy to change my infusion site this morning. I did NOT like having it set up on my butt cheek at all. I kept worrying every time I changed my clothes, or went to the washroom, or even when I was just sitting down, that I was gonna somehow rip it out again. And when I did pull it out, the canula was all munched up and bent over like a twisted up tree! So yeah, I’m thinking I’m gonna be sticking with the belly sites for awhile, and hopefully I’ll be able to figure out a way to make them work with my cycling. So the other day, when I was at one of the health food stores nearby, I bought two Whole Food Vega Vibarancy bars on impulse (yes, I am one of those shoppers … I used to drive my mom nuts

Picture perfect

For the first time in a long time, like since October, I didn’t feel any pain today – nothing! My hips felt like how I imagine a normal 31-year-old, non-runner’s hips would feel, and dare I say even, a 20-something-year-old’s hips. My knees felt like they could dance for hours and hours and not be plagued by twangs of sharp, shooting pain. My feet and ankles felt like they could be propped up in heels for days. I don’t know what I did. I don’t know if it’s the new yoga routine, or the fruit-based recovery drink, or the resurfacing of cycling, or the strength training or the miracle-ball therapy (not the orange ball, but miracle ball … more on that later), but whatever it is, I’m liking it. Loving it! On Saturday, after a 75-minute yoga session in the morning, Mario and I headed out to UBC with our
