Rain, rain go away

I had great plans to go for a nice long Vancouver bike ride this afternoon, but alas the meteorologists lied when they said sunshine all weekend – it was pouring buckets today! So, instead, I went shoe shopping! You may not think that’s much of an exercise, but please, do let me enlighten you: METROTOWN! This place, otherwise known as the mall of hell, has over 450 stores; 19 of which are shoe stores. And no, they are not all situated side by each – they are spaced out over three levels and 1.8 million square feet! That in itself could be a worthy amount of exercise, but then you’ve got to add the people into the mix. Over the course of a year, this place attracts more than 18 million shoppers, the majority of which I think showed up today! Ohhhhhh how I long for the days of the Olympics when […]

Hockey time in the city

It’s hockey time! The Vancouver Canucks officially started their playoffs series tonight and I had the option of either watching my boys (Ryan Kesler, need I say more) on the 50-inch plasma or the cruddy ol’ tube TV in the gym downstairs. I opted for the 50-inch, which means no gym. I had full intentions, well ok, maybe only partial intentions, of doing weights tonight, but the drive home took forever (everyone was probably going to the game) and by the time I got home I was exhausted and famished. I also had the upstairs of the condo to clean, and laundry to do, and thoughts of baking a rhubarb tart for tomorrow night’s dessert. I know, I know, excuses, excuses. But hey, I’m not gonna sweat it – get it 😉 – a girl needs a down day every once in awhile. Today was my down day … come to think

Protesting in pink

Good golly it was a pink-filled world today – my perfect kind of day! I went to three schools for work today and everywhere I turned there were students in pink, teachers in pink, even a principal wearing a pink tie. And yes, this fine, young reporter was wearing oodles of pink hues too! Were you? The story of anti-bullying day, also known as pink shirt day, is pretty amazing when you think about it. It all started from the warm hearts of two Grade 12 students in Nova Scotia who would not stand for bullying at their school. In a matter of protest, after a younger student was harassed, threatened and called gay for wearing pink to school, David Shepherd and Travis Price went out and bought 50 pink shirts from a discount store, and got the word out to their fellow classmates via email that bullying was just

Trying not to drool

My diabetes doctor is like my George Clooney – I have had a crush on this guy since I was like 14! Sorry Mario, but we have history. Before he was my doctor, he was my camp doctor, one of two doctors at Camp Elphinstone on Gibsons (a camp for diabetics and “normal” kids too), and I kid you not, every morning and evening when we’d have to go and see the docs, all the girls would be in my doctor’s line, a line that extended well out the door. When he officially became my doctor at 18, I was practically jumping out of my skin with excitement. He’s always had the salt-and-pepper look that Clooney has, and the coolness of Clooney, and a little bit of the dorkiness too … he so sports the bow tie! Love the bow tie! And so this morning I had my yearly visit with

Hot for the hockey pool

Six years seems like forever ago. On April 12, 2004, my grandpa, who was far too young, and far too amazing, to leave this earth passed away from lung cancer. He was one of the most incredible men I have ever known; so caring, so loving, so gentle and kind … pretty much just amazing in every way possible. And he was a huge hockey fanatic, which makes tonight’s entry so perfect. I love you grandpa! You are forever missed! So, hockey. On the same day I got paid out for coming in third place in my workplace regular season hockey pool (just $10, not exactly the lottery, but still 50 per cent more than what I put in) I had to prepare for the Real Man’s Hockey Pool, which was held this evening. Yes, yes, I know, I’m a girl, but when you love hockey as much as I
