Turning it around one prick at a time

As the annoying people all around me gleefully sang out with a jingle in their tune and a twinkle in their eye “Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!” I grumbled with a Grinch in my tone and a death defying don’t mess me with me glare in my stare “I hate snow! I hate snow! I hate it everywhere!” Ah yes, the weather gods did not look down on me favourably today. The white flakes of terror started falling all around me shortly after noon. Just in case you haven’t yet gleaned, I’m not such a huge fan of the snow, never have been really. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I live in B.C. and as beautiful as this province most definitely is, snow falling anywhere away from the mountains is not a beautiful sight. It’s not the fluffy cotton-like snow you’d […]

Picking a fight with stationary bike

I was only on it for 30 minutes, just 30 minutes, not three hours, not two hours, not even an hour, and yet, I still managed to walk away with new annoying aches – in my lower back and my brain. Another reason to add to the list of many reasons why I do so dislike the dreaded snoresville stationary bike. Now, generally I love cycling, it’s not my passion like running, but it is something I very much enjoy doing especially with Mario, who’s rather hardcore about it (Have I mentioned we have a bike room dedicated to everything bike related?) But I am most definitely a fair weather cyclist. You will not catch me cycling outside in the winter months, you’d even be hard pressed to catch me in the fall months … unless, of course, a certain cousin of mine decides to organize an epic ride through Flanders

Converting the running athiest

Ohmygawd! Ohmygawd! Ohmygawd! Let me just say it one more time OH. MY. GAWD. The man who makes fun of us runners, who laughs at us when he sees us running down the streets, calls us weird, repeatedly questions why we think running is so much fun, that man, my husband, put on his road hockey sneakers this evening and went for a run! What? Yep, that’s right, 3 km he swung his arms, 3 km he kicked his feet out, 3 km he worked up a face-reddening sweat, 3 km he ran. He’ll deny it to the bitter end though, even after commenting on how it’ll be good conditioning for his road hockey, a different kind of workout than his cycling condition, even after seeing the photo evidence, he will continue to say he did not run. He was merely “accompanying,” he says. Oh yeah, I ran too! First

She’s got the funk

I miss it like I miss Beverly Hills 90210 (oh yes, I do miss me a good Kelly Taylor and Dylan McKay fix). I miss it like I miss my fingers before they became tender diabetic pin cushions. I miss it like I miss the feeling of a really good book between my fingers. What is this I miss, you ask. My running, I miss it like you wouldn’t believe. So why is it that I’m not running? Why do I continue to let the dust build up on my sneakers? Why do I spend all day indoors, when I could be out freeing my mind and my legs with a good 5 km run? Why did I angrily pack up my water bottles that were taunting me on the kitchen counter and store them in the bike room closet – out of sight, out of mind? Why? I had every

Off to the torture chamber I go

It’s official, I am going to be seriously poor come Christmas. I suppose it’s partly my fault, okay all my fault, I mean I did fall in love with a man whose birthday is two weeks after Christmas (that should be banned) and who, no matter how much I plead, is not willing to push his birthday up a couple of months … it’s only fair really, he gets six months between Christmas and my birthday! But I digress. Not only am I shopping for Christmas and for birthday, I am also shopping for me – my body that is. It’s recently become clear that unless I invest in improving my body by strengthening my core I will continue to be plagued by these annoying aches and pains that have kept me off the road now for more than a month! Last week I made hints that I might be
